My work begins with the collecting of materials that are part ordinary and part cultural detritus. The work is grounded in the putting together of these disparate materials and the relationships that are formed. These juxtapositions often form hybrids that emphasize irony and the inherent contradictions of function/dysfunction and the rational/irrational. I think of these incongruous combinations as a kind of ‘collision’ that underlines the absurd, the fantastical and the paradoxical. Assumptions and preconceptions are broken down not only via my process but also in the resulting dream-like objects.
Ultimately the influence of raising two sons and observing the inherent playfulness that they bring to their understanding of the world has deeply affected me. This has pushed me to think about the realm of the unexpected and the unconscious. My notions of stability and fixed perceptions have been steered towards the power of the less defined area of the imagination. I hope that the viewer will address these works in a way that relies on the instinctual rather than the logical.
